When God Speaks Through a Cucumber Vine

I’m tired, but there is something about being in my garden that restores me and gives me peace. The Lord meets me there. He gives me insight, opens my eyes to His creation, and speaks to me through the simple act of growing and nurturing vegetables. It’s also the place where I get to “talk” to my dad (he would be so proud), and my siblings. We all used to talk about our gardens. They would laugh at this country‑turned‑city but still country girl. Those conversations with my family members who have gone on to glory (probably still laughing at me right now), are stories for another day.

Today, I want to share how the Lord used a cucumber plant to speak to me.

Although this vine appears dead, it is still producing. The root is fading, the leaves are drying, and the vine looks like it has given all it can give, yet cucumbers fruit are still coming forth. Sometimes we focus so much on the dying root that we miss the miracle: there is still life, still beauty, still fullness emerging from what looks like decay.

Through this vine, the Lord reminded me; no matter your mental, physical, or emotional state, you were put here to produce until God says your assignment is done.

I know many ask, “How do you produce through mental trauma, exhaustion, or emotional heaviness?”

Here is what I’ve learned:

  • Surrender to God. I can’t do any of this in my own strength.

  • Call out your challenge and speak truth over it.

  • Take small steps. You don’t have to conquer everything today.

  • Remember that God is walking with you.

  • Declare who you belong to.

  • Expect growth - even through mental and emotional challenges.

And here is the declaration I speak over myself:

I acknowledge the weight on my mind and the emotions in my heart, but I refuse to carry them alone. I release every fear, worry, and heavy thought into God’s hands, trusting Him with what I cannot control. In exchange, I receive His peace, His clarity, and His strength for this moment. I rise as a Proverbs 31 woman—steady, surrendered, and supported by His grace.
